I have fallen way behind in posting previews...so, today's blog is called "catch-up"

Enjoy a peak at some sessions from this spring...
You may recognize this cutie as one of the winners from the 2009 Vancouver Island Baby Fair photo contest!This little cutie is gearing up for tea time...only fitting since she has recently opened up a cafe on the water - the Lido (ok...her daddy has opened it up)
Check it out - near the Harbour planes...by the ol' 'Boom Boom' room (...admit it...you know where that is!)
You know how they say pregnant woman can 'glow'....I think this image is the perfect example...she simply radiates!

This little cutie was FULL of energy...her trampoline definitely got a workout that day!
I had the pleasure of capturing this little one first while she was still in her mamma's belly...and now...this sweet, amazing little angel.
The weather was beautiful as we headed out to Beacon Hill for a family session

I've been playing catch up from a busy May, and am just getting around to posting a few photos from my trip to Calgary.

Last time I saw this family, this little guy was snug as a bug in his Mommy's tummy - here he is at 1!

Getting some big sister lovin'

She is such a ham - so much fun!

And this little one was still in her mamma's belly last time I was in Calgary!

Amazingly enough, these two came into the world on the same day!

(their kitty really really wanted to be in the family photos too!)

Then it was off to the park for a family session

Playtime got serious - shoes came off!
Ever try to read in a car when you are on a really windy road? You know that feeling you get in your tummy....well...it's a bit like that being on a spinning merry-go-round while looking through your viewfinder.

I wasn't sure I was going to survive it....but the result was well worth the dizziness!
After the kids were played out at the park, we took some time to photograph baby #3-on-the-way!
Congrats E&M - looking forward to meeting the new addition to the family in August!

I just received a note from a client a few moments ago, and I wanted to pass her message along.

The Pye family was like many families I have had the pleasure of photographing. A slightly shy toddler (who eventually warms up and shows off his personality), a proud mom, and even prouder dad.

Sadly, 10 years after his original diagnosis, a brain tumour claimed Greg's life at the age of 37.In honour of her husband, Nancy will be doing the "Great Lake Walk in Memory of Greg Pye"

The New Space

We haven't fully unpacked (which means our house is a mess), so I don't have inside photos to share, but here it is on the outside...
the view from our living/dining room & bedroom...
And here's the beautiful new studio space!
I had some BIG studio samples come in - I am currently obsessed with large wall potraits - 20x20 and 20x24 are my new favourite sizes...it's not so big that you need to own a mansion for it to work, but it is large enough to turn your portraits into art.

As soon as they are framed, I'll post more photos of the space.

And here's the very first photo I took in the new studio space (even before I had the backdrops unpacked!)I love having my nieces around!

Confused Weather!

I hope everyone had a lovely long weekend!

I enjoyed the variable temperatures of Calgary. On Saturday, I was carefully avoiding a sunburn in 24 degree weather while taking a few family sessions outdoors. Sunday was just as nice, and then Monday, we woke up to snow (moving that session indoors!)

Sigh.

All in all, a great weekend though - some nice family shots, maternity photos, and two little cuties turning 1! (no..not twins).

I'll get a preview of those up in the next couple of days!

(and don't believe anyone who tells you Kamloops is a desert - I think we've had more rain here than in Victoria since I moved here!)

It's a new season for Prairie Child Photography - wedding season!?!

I promised I would post some photos of my new studio space soon...but when there are fun wedding photos to play around with, how can I possibly resist!

This weekend I had the pleasure of shooting - quite possibly - one of the cutest bride & grooms ever!The girls were troopers out in the May ocean breeze!

Of course, the new Mrs. Hudson had some help staying warm!Congrats Jonas & Lauren!

The house has sold, and we've made the move! I will be posting some photos of my new studio shortly.

We'll also be announcing the winner of the People's Choice pick for the 3rd Annual Sprouts Model Search for Charity!

Last week I had the pleasure of doing some promo shots for a new music group in Victoria - The Ramble!

It's fun to shoot "big kids" too...especially this energetic, fun-loving folk trio!

It was a little chilly just before sunset, but they toughed it out like troopers.

Circle of Life...(the beginning)

When it first came out (and several years after!), The Lion King used to be one of my favourite movies. I have wonder if listening to "The Circle of Life" regularly somehow influenced where I am today.Because this past weekend, I had the privilege of capturing the beginning of this circle, with a beautiful maternity session and a couple of sweet newborn shoots.

Interested in a newborn session?
Whether it's with Prairie Child Photography, another photographer, or you are doing it at home, I urge you to try to capture your wee one within the first 2 weeks - ideally, within the first week.

Newborns change SO fast. They lose their "curl," their back wrinkles, the peach fuzz on their back. Their wee hands and curled-up toes start to grow - fast! These are the little details you want to capture while you can, because as hard as it is to believe when you first have them...these sweet details start to fade.

Ode to my Niece!

I can't believe it, my baby niece is 3 today!

I am amazed at how quickly that time has gone. It seems like just yesterday I was meeting her for the first time!
The changes in looks, in personality, everything...is truly amazing (although she was born with her playful, crazy spirit!)

And now...a grown up princess!I am excited to say that we have an offer on our house, and it looks like we will be moving the beginning of May!

I will be booking sessions a few months in advance, to be able to coordinate my Victoria/Kamloops sessions.

We are also happy to say that FOUR of the models have been chosen! But - as you can see, we are still missing the final model!

We simply couldn't decide, so we are putting it to a "People's Choice" pick! Check out the models in the running & vote for your favourite one!
You can also find our Facebook Group to tell your friends about it!

And remember, one of the lucky little models will find themselves on the cover of Island Child Magazine!

Interested in Ordering Prints?
Please have a read through the FAQ below, as it might answer some questions that come up. If you ordered prints from the last model search, or the Nanaimo Baby Fair, you'll know the drill!

Can I purchase the digital file?
YES! The digital negative can be purchased for $35 Cdn (note: price is per image). These files can be printed up to 8x10s. When you purchase the digital negative online, you will first receive a low-resolution image. I will complete the portrait finishing on the chosen file, and email the finished image to you.

Why are your prices in USD?
I haven't found a good online service here in Canada (and I've now been looking for TWO years!) - if someone knows of a place that offers a service to the professional user - please let me know!

If it's US prices, aren't these prints going to cost more?
For the model search, I dropped my print & digital negative prices (a lot!) - so, you are in fact, paying much less -and, prices have been adjusted to USD to account for the exchange rate.

What about shipping costs?
Yes - it's true - there are shipping charges - I am yet to find a place that offers me free shipping. Depending on the size/weight of your order, the economy shipping is ~$4-7 for airmail parcel. You can avoid shipping charges by purchasing the digital negatives & printing locally.

What about tax?
There will be no additional tax added to your order.

Spring(?) on the Prairies

In the meantime, I thought I would share a couple photos I took while I was at home last week.

It may feel like spring here, but back home, it was all winter.

Cold - but beautiful - the hoar frost thick on the trees, the sky, a brilliant blue, and the sun, turning ice crystals into a thousand dancing stars."Locals" on the farm
There is quite an abundance of birds out there....
It could have something to do with my parents converting a bird bath into one giant birdfeeder
And here is their resident squirrel -this little guy gets quite protective of his stash!
So while we enjoy the blossoms here...this is what life back on the farm looked like last week!

Thank-you for your understanding while I've been out of reach this past week.

My grandfather passed away, and I have been back in Saskatchewan with my family. I will be back in Victoria tomorrow (Friday, March 27th).

My grandpa was an amazing man. His, truly, was a life well-lived.

Left in a letter to the family was this simple statement.

"Enjoy life...because it is good, if you make it good."

How right you are grandpa...how right you are.

Unexpected Trip Home

Unfortunately some sad family news has come, and I will be flying back to Saskatchewan this evening.

I won't have internet access where I am staying, and therefore will be out of touch for a number of days.

Model Search - Day 2 (rain, rain, rain)

It was a rainy day for the second half of the 3rd Annual Sprouts Model Search.And while it may have stopped some folks from coming down, there were still over 60 young models who turned up during the day (over 140 over the 2 day event).

(this was our youngest model!)

In the end, we raised over $1,500 for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation!
Thanks to all for coming down and supporting this great local charity!

(you can learn more about them and donate online - http://www.victoriahf.ca/)The Shaw Daily will be airing a clip from the event this evening (Tuesday, between 6:30PM-10:30PM) - be sure to tune to see if they happened to catch you in action!

We'll be announcing the winners within the week (and prints will be ready for pick-up from Sprouts after the weekend).

Sneak Peek of Model Search - Day 1

It was a crazy start to Day 1 of the 3rd Annual Sprouts Model Search!
By 9:30, we had a line started outside, so we opened the doors early & got snapping.
Karen Elgersma and the crew from the Shaw Daily were there to capture the mayhem and do some interviews with the Sprouts gals and the Victoria Hospitals Foundation (watch for them, Tuesday night on the Shaw Daily)...

..and then, a seagull decided it would be a good day to fly into the transformer on the building (poor seagull) - luckily, the power outages were brief, and those in line, patient!

I haven't done the "official" count, but I believe we had over 80 kids participate, and raised over $800 for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) thus far!

Which means, we need to raise over $1,200 today to meet my goal of $2,000!

I know we can do it!

Model Search is ON!

(While at times they seemed intent on waking each other up, with some hot water bottles, a hair dryer, and the key ingredient -nourishment from mom - we did get them sleeping at the same time!)

Sprouts Model Search!

It's that time of year again!The 3rd Annual Sprouts Model Search for Charity!

Date: March 13 & 14
Time: 10AM - 4PM
Venue: Sprouts Children's Boutique (202-536 Herald Street)

Participation by $10 donation to the Victoria Hospitals Foundation (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

How can you help us to keep things running smoothly?

1. When you arrive, please get a number.
2. Listen to what number we are on. When we are 2 away from your number, join us "on deck"
3. At this point, please get your little one ready (ie: out of sling, out of stroller)
4. Please have your $10 donation ready (we are only able to accept cash)
5. Fill out the entry form/image release form (sample here)
(feel free to download it now, print it out & have it pre-filled before you come!)
6. When it's your turn, please hand the entry form & donation to the photographer

And please remember, this is a model search (not to be confused with a photography session!)

We want as many people as possible to be able to participate, and our aim is to get one good shot/participant (anything more is a bonus!).

As for the question, "what should my child wear?" - that's entirely up to you!

We will be doing a shoot with the winners at the end of the month/early April, when they'll be sporting Sprouts' gear, and these will be the photos used in the ad campaign. Winners will be announced a week after the event in the Sprout-e-News & PrairiE-news.

And last, but not least, it's meant to be a FUN event to raise money for charity!

(so if crowds and a bit of mayhem causes you stress, you may consider passing on this event!)

What happens after the event?
* Your Free 5x7 print will be ready for pick-up at Sprouts after March 21st
* The 5 winners will be announced via email one week after the event
* Winners will come for another photo shoot down at Sprouts (date TBA)
* One lucky winner will grace the cover of Island Child Magazine (editor's pick)

If you love your print & want to purchase more, you can do so online. But please note - I have still not found a Canadian service that offers online order & print fulfillment (so any prints ordered will ship from the states)!

Day Two at the Fair

While today was a bit quieter than yesterday at the fair, the kids definitely weren't going to let me off easy!

It would seem today was "mommy day" - and lots of little ones really, really, really did not want to come out of their mommy's arms and on to the big white backdrop with the flashing lights.

Who can blame them!

But, with some crazy "sneezes," hand puppets, and whole lot of peek-a-boo, the smiles came out!...and sometimes, third time really is the charm!And, a big, BIG thank-you to Sheryl & Lauren for their amazing work at keeping things running smoothly at the booth! (and letting me test my lighting)

(But I'm afraid you still can't enter the photo contest - 6 & under only....sorry ladies!)

It was a busy day at Day 1 of the Vancouver Island Baby Fair in Nanaimo.I *believe* we had over 104 children photographed at the photo booth (but I haven't done the official count!) - it must be somewhere in that ballpark, because I'm pretty slow moving this morning!

It would seem some little ones are simply too excited to meet their parents, and refuse to wait the full term!

Here are few photos from some recent sessions where both of these little girls decided 3 more weeks was too long to wait, and joined the world at 36 weeks!

Little Ghosts & Goblins...

There were far more little 'animals' running around my studio than ghosts this Halloween..and can I just say - where were these cute costumes when WE were kids?!?!
We started the morning with a royal visit...Of course, she is a modern day princess...happy to rescue her prince if need be!
The royal family was kind enough to let their siblings join in for a shot! (what's a palace without a royal tiger and royally sleepy lady bug!)
This cute dragon soon found himself surrounded by pumpkins!
Next up, the sweetest little bunny!
And a 'oh-so-adorable' little chick!

Then we had some more monkey business!
...a monster mash
(Let's hope this sweet princess can turn this trooper away from the 'dark side!')
And he's wondering if his brother was EVER going to wake for their shoot....as it turns out, he decided to sleep right through it!

These sweet girls quickly let us know that birds & butterflies belong outside...which is where we ended up!

And this was one of those costumes you WISHED was in your size...of course, no one could every wear it as well, and with as much personality, as Ms. Kya!And that's it!

Krazy Kamloops!

It was a whirlwind trip to the Loops just before Halloween...5 shoots over 4 days!

Here Payton is showing off the newest member of her family!

Tyanne welcomed a new member to her family too!

(I am so lucky this little on decided to come out early, and we were able to capture her at just 6 days old!)

She was so tiny, she was the first baby small enough to fit in my bamboo bowl!

Of course, I have bigger things to sit in for the bigger kids...as Carter demonstrates here!

And, in the spirit of the season, we also had some pumpkins on hand (well...my sister had some pumpkins on hand, which I shamelessly stole for my sessions!)Miranda was an excellent coordinator, directing the gang for the photo shoot! (she did a great job!)

And, Mother Nature smiled on us for the last shoot of the weekend...and even though this little guy just woke up from his only 3 minute nap for the day, he was a trooper!

(cheerios always help!)

He was my youngest client (just 7 days old), but over the weekend in Kamloops, a little girl decided to come out a couple weeks early, so we lucked out and had a chance to photograph her at 6 days old!

Here's a little peek from a recent shoot down at Gyro Park...

It was pretty chilly first thing in the morning, but the sunshine warmed things up!Here we stopped for a little snack break! But once we were fueled up, it was time to play!This brother & sister duo were a LOT of fun (lots of giggles...once I stopped be the "strange lady with a camera" and became the "nice lady helping pile leaves!"

Let me first just say - WOW! There are so many cute kids in this town, it's nuts.

Here's a little sneak peek into an recent outdoor session at Summit Park.
I hadn't been to that park before - it's beautiful!

This little guy managed to find the season's last ripe blackberries!It took some tickling to try to pry him away from the blackberry bushes!

Then, lunch time came, and it was time to head home...

I Survived!

I just wanted to post a quick note to say, that yes indeed, I made it out of the Baby Fair alive...voiceless....a little sore....but alive...and simply amazed at all the cute kids in this city!

Over the 2 days, we saw over 215 children at the Photo Contest, raising LOTS of money for Success by Six (not sure of exact tally - watch the Baby Fair website for more details (www.vancouver islandbabayfair.com).

Thank you to all who participated!

I'll post a few sneak peaks in the coming weeks...and perhaps even get some of those Europe photos up I keep threatening to!

Make 'Em Cry!

I have to say, as a photographer, one of my highlights is making people cry.

Yes - you heard me right.

When I drop off a package, and I watch the parents go through the little album, nothing gives me the warm fuzzies as much as watching tears well up in their eyes.

That's when I know I've really captured their family.

I also get the warm fuzzies when people send in kind words.

At the upcoming Baby Fair, I'm going to be featuring some of these testimonials, along with a smattering of photos from our session.

Famous Seamus turns one (almost!)

Does this little guy look familiar?
We've been watching him grow up this last year with the "Bunnyhugs" package.This package includes a newborn session, and another one at 3-4 months, 6-9months and one year....the package also includes a storyboard, which can feature 4-7 photos from the year (which I'll show some samples in future post).

In the meantime, a little look into the session!

And, as fall is *almost* here, we thought we would have some fun with Halloween!
Well..it was fun...and then...
So, it was time to move on to the cake!You wouldn't know it here - but this little guy took some convincing that the cake was worth checking out!

But once he got into it...he seemed to be enjoy himself!
(Luckily he fit in my sink for a little impromptu bath time!)

Little Micky Blue Eyes...

Ok, so his name isn't Micky - but this little guy has the most beautiful blue eyes! (which match his little bunny perfectly!)
And, the cutest little toes...although my husband would tell me I'm baby foot obsessed - can I help it if they just happen to be the most adorable thing in the world.I can just see his thought bubble in this photo - "There they go again...sigh.."

This post is a bit nostalgic.

You see, I went back home this summer...for the last time.

Ok - perhaps that's a bit melodramatic. I will be back again, but, I won't be able to go to my old family home, as my folks have sold it.

Our last family shots in front of the house - boohoo!Which means, our new 'family' home is going to be down at our cabin (not a bad thing!)

And speaking of the cabin, here are a few shots of my nieces enjoying roasted marshmellows..

We had a few nice days, and I got some great bikini shots, so I had to make a couple storyboards from them.

Remember that song, "Angel Eyes?" - seems to me it came on at every Record Hop we had (fyi - record hop is small town Saskatchewan lingo for a dance!)Well, I have a feeling that one day, this little guy is going to have people lining up to dance with him because he does have 'angel eyes!'

But then Naomi realized she had no teeth, making apple eating quite difficult!

Print Order FAQ!

Ok..so I've had some good questions come in, so I thought I would share!

1. Why are your prices in USD?
I haven't found a good online service here in Canada - if someone knows of a place that offers a service to the professional user - please let me know!

2. If it's US prices, aren't these prints going to cost more?
For the model search, I dropped my print prices (a lot!) - so, you are in fact, paying much less -remember, gone are the days where our dollar is worthless in the states - for now at least! :)
(example: Regular 5x7 print is $25 Cdn, model search price = $15USD(which is only $15.28 CDN)

3. What about shipping costs?
Yes - it's true - there are shipping charges (I also have shipping charges when I send out locally...because as nice as I ask them, the folks at the post office just won't send my stuff for free!) Depending on the size/weight of your order, the economy shipping is ~$7-8 for airmail parcel.

3. What about tax?
There will be no additional tax added to your order.

I'm using a new online service...it's called SmugMug (I've heard good things about it, but let's be honest, their name is pretty darn funny too...so I had to check them out!)

To order a print, simply click "buy this print" and indicate the size & quantity you would like. I generally order Matte prints - however, the Lustre has the "pop" of gloss, without the finger prints & glare (it is, however, slightly more expensive as it is on heavier paper).

When you send in your order, I will be notified, and will review the order, complete any additional portrait retouching, and (this is the important part!), make sure the photo can be cropped to the size specified.

If you choose to purchase a 8x10, part of the image will be cropped (if you don't want any part of the image cropped, you may want to opt for the 8x12 - although frames are slightly harder to come by - but there are several places in town carrying them!)

I am offering my reprints at a special rate for the model search (but, please note that prices are in USD which is virtually at par...but...not exactly!).

Shipping "economy" takes ~2 weeks (and prices vary based on size of prints ordered - it lets you know exact shipping costs before you finalize order).

I tested out the site on my mom & my sister and they breezed through the process - however, if you do have questions, please feel free to email (erin@prairiechild.com) or call (250) 361.1602.

Day 2 of the Sprouts Model Search for Charity was just as busy as Day 1 (thanks to all who came out & braved the "elements")
Ok, so maybe the snow had melted before the event began, but it was still a chilly April day!

We had another 60 "models" during the day, which makes the 2nd Annual Search almost 50% bigger than last year! Over the 2 days, the search raised over $1000 for Artemis Place!! (nice work everyone!)Our lucky 3 winners will be announced this coming week (and, I'll also be making a web gallery available with all the contestants, with an opportunity to purchase other prints if you like!)Watch for the announcement soon (I'll post it here & on my website - www.prairiechild.com) - so be sure to check back soon!

Day one of the 2nd Annual Sprouts' "Babe & Me" Model Search for Charity was a HIT!

(here's a smattering of some pics taken)
We had over 60 "babe & me" groups come through the door on Wednesday....talk about b-u-s-y!It was a blast! There were SOOOO many cutie-pies (and we raised over $500 for Artemis Place - nice work everyone!)

I'm looking forward to another action packed day tomorrow (Saturday, April 19th).
(but this time, I'll be sure to do more yoga stretches in the morning, so I'll be ready for 7 hours of squatting! My knees needed some serious ice packs Wednesday night!)

It's raining....babies??

Ok- so, it's not really raining babies - but my oh my, there were a whole lotta pregnant bellies strolling around Victoria's Largest Baby Shower on Sunday.

I tell you, it didn't help my baby fever any - pregnant women are so beautiful (and it didn't help that Bellies in Bloom were my booth neighbours - they have such great stuff!)

And speaking of neighbours - this is my 'real' neighbour Kwyn, showing off her incredibly adorable onesie collection - I LOVE the red monkey (you can see it better at www.tinygiggles.ca)

And of course...I have to share a photo of my booth too!

Jack Puts on a Good Show!

Nieces, Babies, Bellies & More!

It's been a busy few weeks - first I spent some great family time Kamloops, hanging with my nieces, then a whirlwind trip to Calgary, where I managed to squeeze in some family, maternity & newborn sessions!

Baby Seamus Turns 3! (months that is!)

It's possible that you may remember Baby Seamus (& mamma Sika) from a recent post....here is is all little and sweet, with his cute little baby bum!

And, just a few months later (3 to be exact), here he is now! (a bit bigger, a bit blonder & a LOT more interactive!)

He was laying on the charm full blast!

It was one of those sessions I wish I had a video camera so I could capture the giggles along with the cute grins!

Jack Attack!!

So, the other day I was doing a puppy shoot, of this extremely adorable (soon-to-be-very-big) Malamute.

His name is Nuki.

Him mom's name is Colleen...but you aren't allowed to call her "mom"

But I must have said "mom" at least 50 times during the shoot (this is what happens when you are a "cat mom").

No puppies were hurt during this shoot,
but I'm afraid I can't say the same for the toys.

Poor poor jack.

And poor mister ducky.

(Nuki seemed pretty pleased with himself!)

Soon this little puppy will be pulling dog sleds (which you have to admit, is kinda funny when he lives in Victoria!)

That, my friends, was the sound of time flying.

How in the WORLD has it come to November already?

I have many more exciting photo shoots to share with you since we last "spoke", but at the moment, I would like to share a recent experience.

I attended the 5th Annual "Leadership & Mentoring Conference," a legacy program of the Women of Distinction through the YM/YWCA.

When I first heard about it, someone called it the "leadership conference for young women", so, despite the "oil of olay twice a day" regime I've stuck by since my grandma told me to at age 14, I figured I would still look too old to get in!

Turns out, it's for "young" women age 21-34. Heck - I got YEARS left to go - half a decade even! :)

Anyway, why am I rambling on about it? I just wanted share what a positive experience it was for me, and I hope you'll see the changes it brings to my photography business (as in...I won't wait 2 more months to post another entry!)

If you are a "young woman"...or have a sister, daughter, grandaughter, niece, neighbour, friend that is...I HIGHLY recommend going. (www.lmconference.ca).

It was INSPIRING :)

Is that how the drummer boy song went?

As if I don't know.. seeing as I am one of the biggest Bony M fans out there...ok...maybe not. Remember that "Brown Girl in the Rain" song? Whenever that comes to mind, I can't get it out of my head (sorta like that darn "killing me softly") Perhaps it's time I buy some new music!

Anyway - why mention the drummer boy song? Well, as mentioned, this post features what I believe to be Victoria's youngest drummer!

I made a trip out to Shawnigan lake, to capture the beatiful W. family. Lynn, Byron and sweet Jiya.

Families like this make it SUCH easy work taking great photos!

100 Pounds of Drool

Ok...so it's been awhile - but I'm finally getting to my "perils of working with a 100 pound dog" .First, meet Mr. Ripley.

Of course, it is hard to get a real sense of respect for the SIZE of this puppy, until you have something to compare it to. Meet Mr.Ripley's dad, Jay (note that Ripley is taller).

(of course, for those of you who know Jay will know that isn't SUCH a big feat..hehe)

Anyway, the drool wasn't actually the danger...nor was I the one in any danger. It was....sigh....my pretty little beach ball.

I thought it would make a cute shot, and when Jay saw it was a purple ball, he exlaimed - "GREAT! Purple is Ripley's favourite colour"

Favourite colour? Favourite colour to EAT it appeared!

Hm...I wonder what he would have done to the ball if it HADN'T been his favourite colour?

Anyway, the ball was the only casualty, and the shoot was a lot of fun.

But with these two crazy guys, how could it not be! And as demonstrated here, regardless of Mr Ripley's size, Jay assured me he was the one "in control!"

Of course, as you can see from Ripley's smirk here, he knows otherwise!

No, I didn't just mispell "alive" - I'm talking about my website - "Prairie Child is now live on the web!" Yahoo!

That's right, www.prairiechild.com has come to life (ok - the temp landing page has come to life - the rest of the site is still in the works!) And yes...that incredibly cute & beautiful child IS my incredibly amazing niece!

But, did you see what else is exciting? I have a logo!

(Notice the continued homage to the homeland - heck, we even used good ol' Saskatchewan colours...softened up a bit...didn't really want to match the roughriders - or schneider electric for that matter - has anyone else noticed that schneider seems to have stolen the riders logo?? Seriously - click on those links and check it out!)

"Yeah...right!".. at least that's what I'm sure Asher & his human were thinking during their photo shoot...and, with good reason..at least for the first 10 minutes.

For all you waiting to hear the humiliating tale...(all 2 of you! hehe) - here it is!

I had everything prepped for the upcoming photo shoot. Lights were set & tested. Light meter checked. The "studio" was feeling relatively comfortable, despite the plus 30 heat outside. Camerea set, memory card erased. I was ready to go.

(Or...so I thought).

Asher & his human arrived right on time. He quickly adjusted to "the studio", and within minutes, he was doing some serious posing for me.

FANTASTIC!

I quickly grabbed my camera, composed the first shot...and...click.

I glanced down to the LCD to make sure all looked good, and...what the?!?!?!

The screen was competely BLACK. Oh dear.

I quickly started "troubleshooting" (a fancy way to say I started to frantically press a bunch of buttons). Of course, this only being the 5th session I had ever done, I really didn't have much to go on.

I checked this and that, and all looked fine. I was mystified. I tried a few adjustments....still black.

Hoping I had just changed the display option, and there was a photo somewhere, I took one in auto mode using the on camera flash, and, it came up perfectly fine.

Uh...err....hm....

After a VERYpainstakingly embarrassing 4-6 minutes (which felt like an HOUR!), I asked, "did the lights flash when I just snapped that last photo. "nope."

Good Grief!

So, after turning all possible shades of red, I mustered up all the confidence I had left, swaggered over to my main light, and flicked the darn remote trigger to "ON"

Anyway...after that, it was off to the races, and as you can see, the session resulted in some great shots!

The moral of the story..if your photographer if having difficulties during the start of your session, ask them if everything is turned on. Sounds obvious. And yet....

"Toys schmoys - I want keys keys keys"

First of all, to all you parents, grandparents and aunties that are spending waaay too much money on all the fancy toys out there, DON'T!

Why? Well, have you ever noticed that kids seem to like the BOXES the toys come in more than the toys. Or, you proudly place a talking, walking, singing, snoring doll in front of them, and all they want to do is play with your mixing bowls.

Lily, who you'll meet below, is the perfect example of this. Her latest obsession - keys and sunglasses! She simply couldn't get enough of them :)

Anyway, here is part 2 of 3 from my weekend sessions. Lily & her family.

Photo Tip: I learned that she responded well to jingling keys

Another Tip: I also learned it is really hard to zoom in when one hand is flailing about. Perhaps next time, a key jingling assistant will be in order?!!

SMOKIN' HOT!

No, I'm not referring to the much talked about "Victorian heat wave" - I'm talking about my first official "weekend of photo sessions" - I DID IT! (...let there be much rejoicing!)

I didn't run into many snags - in fact just one glitch - which I'm still contemplating whether or not to share - it really was a bit of a brain-fart. Of course, I'm going to bet those stories are the ones that will get you coming back here time and time again...yup - everyone loves a humiliating tale... (so watch for the upcoming post on Asher & his human)

But, first up, a couple of sweethearts - sisters Hana & Emily.

They were a complete dream to photograph. I hope you enjoy viewing a couple as much as I enjoyed taking them!

What I DID learn is that with such cute "models," it is easy to burn through all the memory on my card. I also learned that the download time is s-l-o-w.

I also learned that having balloon fights with such energetic kids is one heck of a workout.

I also learned that if you have a 20 minute balloon fight in between shots, the kids will have really red cheeks for the second half of the shoot! (will get one of those shots up so you can see what I mean!)

And, of course, a BIG thank-you to Auntie Sheryl for helping me out! I hope it wasn't too much "work!"

Killing Me Softly...

You remember that tune don't you? I must admit, I had all but forgotten about it until watching "About A Boy" recently. Now, I can't get the darn thing out of my head...and sadly, I sing it about as well Hugh Grant so it's getting a little painful.

But, it got me thinking about music...and how powerful it can be. Feeling sleepy in the morning? Crank a little Pink Floyd and you're hopping around the living room like a mad woman. Can't sleep at night? Pop in some Enya and you're catching Zzzz's in no time. Of course, sometimes, you aren't planning the tunes...but something comes on, perhaps an old Beach Boys hit and suddenly, you're transported back in time, hanging out in your favourite summer location (for me, our cabin at Round Lake).

The other thing I find does the same thing...photographs (uh oh - am I about to launch into a marketing spiel?) No - seriously though - when I was back visiting the homeland, I was browsing through an album from my first year of university, and I was amazed at how many events I had temporarily forgotten, until I had a sweet reminder in front of me (and sometimes not so sweet..oh...say, like "the frosh 15!")

Now, I'm not saying you should drop everything and go get some photographs professionally done (although, if you want to, give me a call!). But, really - DO pull out your camera and snap off some candids.

You'll be extremely grateful you did. I mean, how else are you going to remember those little things that make life so wonderful:
* how sweet your little girl looks all dressed up in Mommy's clothing
* the crazy stunts your friends pull
* your kitten hanging from the top of the Christmas tree
* how cute your grandma looks with rollers in her hair

And sure, every now and then, I think it IS worthwhile to get some beautiful photographs taken of your whole family (after all, if you are always taking the photos, how are going to remember how YOU looked 5 years from now!)...ok...there - got a pitch in!

It's Official!

Well, a few small hoops to jump through, and Prairie Child Photography is officially registered with the BC Government (and by small hoops, I just mean paying fees!). But, that's good news. I was rather attached to my "tribute to my roots" name, and it would have been rather disappointing to have to change to "Erin Brule Photography."

I mean, the accents would never go in, and I would forever been known as "brool" - ahhh!

So, in keeping with my photo theme, I'm including a couple taken while I was in paparazzi mode at a recent birthday party. Here is the birthday girl, complete with Tiara, and her grandpa.

And, of course, what is party without cake...a HUGE crocodile cake!

Home Bound

This past week I flew back for a trip to the 'homeland.' Of course, this wasn't just a pleasure trip...I was armed with my full home studio, and ready to try out my new toys with the family.

This was the "studio" - set up at our cabin at Round Lake. I'll post some of the photos taken from the "studio" soon.

Luckily my family is great at being a good sport - especially Mom who was helping me with some "prop" selections! (thanks
